Eight Reasons Why Your Kid Should Wrestle

Eight Reasons Why Your Kid Should Wrestle

In the next few months, many children will have the opportunity to participate in wrestling for the first time. Just like the kids, many parents will embrace the opportunity, while others will resist. Because of the timely life lessons wrestling teaches children, I urge everyone to seriously consider trying the sport, if only for one season.

Usually, those who resist wrestling are unfamiliar with the sport. Wrestling can be an intimidating sport, but it’s also one with great potential to develop young adults, both physically and mentally.

My own son resisted until seventh grade. “I don’t want to roll around with a bunch of sweaty guys,” he told me, echoing the popular mantra of basketball players everywhere. My wife, with her medical background, wasn’t very supportive either, citing the skin rashes she saw wrestlers bring to her clinic. I had wrestled in high school – I wasn’t very good, but I wrestled – and I knew what it could teach kids, so I persisted until both agreed to a one-year trial season.

That was four seasons ago – two in junior high, one on the junior varsity team and last year’s varsity season. In that time, he’s experienced extreme highs and extreme lows. There were times that he enjoyed wrestling almost as much as football, and there were times that he talked about quitting. There were dominating wins and puzzling losses, weeks when nothing could go wrong and weeks when everything went wrong. More important than all of that are the lessons that have helped him develop into the young man he is today.

  1. There is no entitlement in wrestling. It doesn’t matter where you are ranked or whether or not your coach likes you, your value as a wrestler depends on your most recent performance on the mat. Last year, I watched a wrestler, who spent most of the season ranked #2, lose two tough matches in the district tournament and fail to qualify for the state tournament. He was a senior who had placed at the state tournament the previous year, but that and his ranking didn’t matter – only what happened on the mat. In a matter of minutes, his season was over. In wrestling, you must constantly earn what you get.
  2. Wrestling teaches toughness. I got my first bloody nose in youth boxing at the age of 7, and never forgot it. At first, I wanted to cry and get out of the ring, but something deep inside me brought me back to the fight. Too many kids make it through childhood without a bloody nose. In wrestling, we have “blood time.” Wrestlers get their mouths smashed, their noses bloodied, their eyes blackened and their joints twisted. Wrestling teaches athletes how to work through pain and discomfort. Wrestling teaches toughness.
  3. Wrestling teaches discipline. Because they have to make weight and need to be in superb shape to succeed, successful wrestlers maintain their bodies like finely tuned machines. Even away from practice and competition, they can’t forget that they are wrestlers. When their friends are feasting on fast food and sodas or staying up too late, wrestlers have to make decisions that will help them on the mat. They know that slipping on discipline will have negative consequences on the mat.

Hurricanes Start Early!

11/17/2015

The Hurricane grapplers began their 2015-16 campaign by spending last Sunday night (11/15) on the mats. First doing some team activities and then ultimately sleeping on the mats as a team. Monday morning, the first day of the wrestling season, began with the 38 members of the team rolling out bright and early at 5am for their first practice. Probably the first team to practice in the entire state, the practice is symbolic of dedication that is required to be successful individually and as a team in this demanding sport. The Hurricanes have just short of 30 practices until the first tournament of the season, the Sprig Gardner in East Hampton on December 12th. See you on the mats!

The Hurricane Deli, located on the North Side of Montauk Highway (208) across from True Value Hardware (I'm not allowed to say Dunkin' Donuts during wrestling season) in Westhampton Beach is once again going to the mat for the Hurricanes. Owner Joe Grady for the second straight year has partnered with former Hurricane wrestler Brian Dean of Sysco to provide ALL the food for the 2nd Annual Parents Dinner to be held at the High School on 11/15/2015 at 4:30pm. Sysco is donating all the meat and Joe's team is preparing it and all the remaining dishes and providing a healthy meal for 100 parents, coaches, and wrestlers for only a nominal cost. This is HUGE for the team and for the MAT Club because it allows us to keep our hard earned Hurricane MAT Club dollars much closer to the mats. Thank you in advance to Brian, Sysco, Joe, and the Hurricane Deli for the amazing support!

The Hurricane Deli (631) 288-5225 is open early EVERY weigh-in day and EVERY Tournament day of the season to support our wrestlers! Show your support by stopping by!

Short Showing At States For Westhampton Beach's Hulse

3/9/2015

Publication: The East Hampton Press & The Southampton Press
By Cailin Riley   Mar 1, 2015 2:59 PM

Westhampton Beach 145-pounder Hunter Hulse was a force at the Suffolk County Division I Wrestling Championships at Hofstra University on February 14 and 15, dominating opponents and advancing further than most expected, finishing third overall.

That finish earned him a spot at the New York State championships this past weekend—and, based on the way he wrestled at counties, it looked as though he was primed for another impressive showing.

But that’s not how it played out for Hulse in his last competition in a Hurricane uniform.

The senior went 0-2 to put an abrupt end to what was an otherwise illustrious high school wrestling career, losing an 8-3 decision to Mike LaLoggia of Webster-Schroeder High School (Section V) in the first round before falling, 7-2, to Adam Santoro of Fordham Prep (Catholic League) in the first round of wrestlebacks.

Westhampton Beach head coach Paul Bass was at a loss when asked to describe what exactly went wrong for Hulse. LaLoggia and Santoro were not considered threats to win the championship, and neither went on to place in the top six. Hulse, meanwhile, had shown plenty of grit in the county semifinals in a hard-fought 3-0 loss to eventual county champ Tommy Dutton of Rocky Point, who went on to win the state title in dominant fashion this weekend.

Bass said Hulse simply did not have the same energy at states.

“I really don’t have an answer,” Bass said on Sunday. “When you’re coaching teenagers, you never know what’s going through their heads. I thought we had a great week of practice leading up to states—he had no issues with making weight, and it was his third time [competing at states]. He just wasn’t the same kid who showed up in the county tournament.”

Making it to states is an accomplishment in its own right, especially for Suffolk County wrestlers, as Suffolk County proves to be the toughest section in state every year. Suffolk was once again the top section at states this year, with 312 points, while Nassau County was a distant second, with 178 points. Bass acknowledged that, but said it wasn’t much of a consolation for him or Hulse.

Overall, however, Hulse had a career to be proud of, going 41-5 in his senior season and making the third trip of his career to states. While he was a freshman and sophomore at Stony Brook, before transferring to Westhampton Beach as a junior, Hulse went to the Division II state tournament.

“I think he had a great last month of the season,” Bass said. “I think he really peaked at the right time, except for the last weekend. He had a hell of a county tournament, and it was nice to get to states. But we just had a bad day up there.”
