Sophomore Jason Montagna and Junior Liam McIntyre accompanied Coach Paul Bass this past week to the NHSCA Nationals in Virginia Beach, VA. It is a fantastic place to get quality mat time against INCREDIBLY talented competition from all over the country, and no Hurricane wrestler had ever placed in this event. Until now....
Sophomore Jason Montagna (120) wrestling against some extremely tough competition, dropped an 11-7 decision to a West Virginia wrestler and then was defeated 15-8 by an opponent from Pennsylvania. Jason, only a Sophomore showed that he can wrestle with anyone in the country.
Junior Liam McIntyre just off a 6th place finish at the New York State tournament entered the 182 pound bracket unseeded among 73 wrestlers. The weight class included the following:
     21 - 1-time all-state wrestlers
     12 - 2-time all-state wrestlers
      6 - 3-time all-state wrestlers
      2 - 1-time state champions
      6 - 2-time state champions
      2 - 3-time state champions
To summarize that, - 39 all-state wrestlers and 10 state champions in a bracket of 73.
Liam won his first three matches of the tournament on Friday, defeating Cody Goding from California 3-0, Connor Bourne from Nevada 7-4 and then reached the quarter-finals by ending the day with a 7-2 victory over 4th seeded Santonio Morina from New Jersey.  On Saturday, Liam dropped a very tough 11-9 decision to 5th seeded Shane Noonan from Pennsylvania which put him into the "blood round" of the wrestle-backs. Unfazed, Liam defeated Jose Valdez from Florida 4-0 which assured him of a podium finish. Liam then faced the #2 seed in the form of Zane Lanham from West Virginia and moved on with an incredible 4-2 victory. He then needed a victory to advance into the consolation finals and did just that with a 7-2 victory over 7th seeded Damen Moyer from Pennsylvania. Liam closed out his amazing run losing in the final match 13-6 at the hands of 3rd seeded Jonothan Fagen from Idaho. The 6-2 record earned Liam a 4th place podium finish and the title of all-american! It was truly an amazing run and a historic event for the WHB wrestling family! Congratulation to both Liam and Jason for the time and effort required to participate on the national stage!
