Canes get trounced by Miller Place - Finish in 3rd Place in Legaue VI

1/9/2019

After a great weekend at the Cory hubbard Duals, the Hurricanes may have had an emotional letdown heading into their final League VI match of the season. Needing a win to secure 2nd place in League VI and an automatic bid to the Suffolk County Team Duals Tournament, WHB was not up to the task. Miller Place took a forfeit at 285 and still led 6-4 after Sophomore Grant Skala got a major decision at 99 pounds. Miller Place then went on to take 40 straight points with 5 pins and wins in 8 matches in a row from 106 through 152 and the match was over. The final tally was 54-19. The Canes will have to cross their fingers and hope they can get an "at large" bid to the Duals Tournament. Meanwhile it was a tough dose of reality but perhaps at a key time as the League Tournament and post-season wrestling is right around the corner! Go Canes!

The Hurricanes as expected, easily won on the road against League VI opponent Amityville on 12/21 by an 84-6 final score. Deja Vu! Canes win again, Citarelli comes up big!

The Hurricanes, fresh off a big win two days before, headed to Islip to face the Lions on the road in League VI action. Arguably underdogs for the second straight match, the Canes jumped out to an early 30-0 lead with a forfeit accepted by Senior Tate Buhl at 195, a pin by Senior Hunter Burling at 220, another forfeit at 285 to Senior Liam McIntyre, a pin by Sophomore Joey D'Agostino, and a forfeit to Sophomore Grant Skala at 106. WHB would need all of that lead and more, as the strength of the Islip lineup would be coming up. Islip won at 113, took a major decision at 120, a pin at 126, a technical fall at 132, and finally a pin at 138. Suddenly the Canes lead was only 30-24 with 6 matches left to wrestle. Sophomore James O'Neil took a very close 5-3 victory at 145 to give WHB a 33-24 lead, but then Islip took a 3-2 win at 152, a major decision (10-2) at 160, and finally a 4-0 decision at 170 to take the lead over the Canes for the first time in the meet by a score of 34-33 setting up the final match at 182. Senior Lawrence Citarell, who won the match to clinch the win two days prior, took the mat and delivered a victory for the Hurricanes with a HUGE 3-1 win in the final match. The final score was: Westhampton Beach - 36 - Islip - 34. The Hurricanes up their record to 2-0 on the season in League VI! Congratulations!! Go Canes!!

Hurricanes defeat Sayville in first League VI action of the season!!

12/12/2018

Westhampton Beach started the season with a surprising 2nd Place finish at the Sprig Gardner Individual Tournament two weeks ago without 40% of their anticipated starting lineup. then a week later the Canes went 5-0 and captured the title at the Yorktown (NY) Dual Meet Tournament going 5-0 during the competition. A very nice start indeed, but this is Long Island wrestling. In Section XI in general, and League VI in particular, successes seen off the Island in particular, should probably come with a warning label affixed to the trophies: "Individual and team results may vary when you return to Long Island". Part humor, part hard reality. League VI Dual meets start quickly in wrestling and the fate of the season often hangs in the balance during the first week. This year the first test was a home dual meet against league rival Sayville. The Canes had to forfeit at 285 and 138 and accepted a forfeit from Sayville at 126, so the Canes would be down net 6 points and in the remaining 12 matches would need to make that up. The key to success in dual meets is to get bonus points with major victories, techs, and pins while not giving up those bonus points to your opponent when you do lose. There were 12 matches wrestled yesterday and through the first 8, WHB had won half, but they had netted 10 more points than Sayville because all the losses were 3 point losses and at the same time the Canes had 3 pins and a major victory. The Canes went 3-1 in the remaining 4 matches netting another bonus point over Sayville and clinched the match with a win by Senior Lawrence Citarelli at 170 pounds with two matches (182 & 195) still remaining. The Canes netted bonus points in 6 of their 7 victories and only allowed Sayvile bonus points in 1 of their 5 wins. A great team effort! The Final Score was 41-30 putting the Canes into the win column and setting them on the path for another League VI dual meet on Friday (12/14/2018) at Islip. Good luck WHB!
