Hurricanes defeat Sayville in first League VI action of the season!!

12/12/2018

Westhampton Beach started the season with a surprising 2nd Place finish at the Sprig Gardner Individual Tournament two weeks ago without 40% of their anticipated starting lineup. then a week later the Canes went 5-0 and captured the title at the Yorktown (NY) Dual Meet Tournament going 5-0 during the competition. A very nice start indeed, but this is Long Island wrestling. In Section XI in general, and League VI in particular, successes seen off the Island in particular, should probably come with a warning label affixed to the trophies: "Individual and team results may vary when you return to Long Island". Part humor, part hard reality. League VI Dual meets start quickly in wrestling and the fate of the season often hangs in the balance during the first week. This year the first test was a home dual meet against league rival Sayville. The Canes had to forfeit at 285 and 138 and accepted a forfeit from Sayville at 126, so the Canes would be down net 6 points and in the remaining 12 matches would need to make that up. The key to success in dual meets is to get bonus points with major victories, techs, and pins while not giving up those bonus points to your opponent when you do lose. There were 12 matches wrestled yesterday and through the first 8, WHB had won half, but they had netted 10 more points than Sayville because all the losses were 3 point losses and at the same time the Canes had 3 pins and a major victory. The Canes went 3-1 in the remaining 4 matches netting another bonus point over Sayville and clinched the match with a win by Senior Lawrence Citarelli at 170 pounds with two matches (182 & 195) still remaining. The Canes netted bonus points in 6 of their 7 victories and only allowed Sayvile bonus points in 1 of their 5 wins. A great team effort! The Final Score was 41-30 putting the Canes into the win column and setting them on the path for another League VI dual meet on Friday (12/14/2018) at Islip. Good luck WHB!

The 2018-19 Hurricanes took to the mats in East Hampton at the Sprig Gardner Individual Tournament in what was likely supposed to be a very tough day. Without 12 wrestlers and 40% of the anticipated starting lineup, the Canes looked to give it their best. Someone forgot to tell Westhampton Beach that they didn't have a chance as the Canes challenged for the title and ended up finishing 2nd to Ward Melville in the tournament!! WHB had 4 First place, 2 second place, 3 third place, 4 fourth place, and 5 fifth place podium finishers! There was a great sense of team and excitement throughout the tournament and we all hope this is the beginning of something special! Congratulations to the whole team!

As always, a huge part of wrestling success is what's done in the off-season. Continuing their tradition of being active during this key time, the Canes travelled to the Greco/Freestyle NY State Tournament on 5/17. 6 wrestlers made the trip and the team was able to secure 6 place finishes over the two wrestling styles. The alternative styles allow the wrestlers to expand their overall wrestling ability by focusing on upper body in Greco, and exposing your opponent in freestyle. Combined, the Canes wrestled 35 matches and garnered some excellent experience. Here is a quick summary of the results:
Junior Hunter Burling - 3 matches - Injury Default
Junior Ryan Darbyshire - 4 matches - Did not Place
Freshman Jack Santora - 6 matches - 4th Place (Greco) 106lbs
Sophomore Jason Montagna - 7 matches - 3rd (Greco) 126lbs
Junior Jake Kass - 5 matches - 3rd (Freestyle) 113lbs & 2nd (Greco) 120lbs   *wrestled up a weight for Greco
Junior Liam McIntyre - 10 matches - 2nd (Freestyle) & 5th (Greco) 195lbs

Congratulations to all of the competitors!!

The Hurricane Wrestling team once again contributed to the Live Your Cor Foundation as part of the proceeds from the annual Pin Pot pledge campaign. The Foundation was founded in memory of former Hurricane wrestler and athletic standout Cory Hubbard (www.liveyourcor.com). Over the past 4 years due to the generosity of the wrestling family and alumni, the team has been able to donate over $5,000 to Live Your Cor that "Pays it forward" by assisting local families that have suffered adversity or personal hardship. Pictured above (left to right) are Holly and Ralph Hubbard who created the foundation. They are receiving the teams donation from coaches Mitchell, Miller and Petroulias. A HUGE thank you to all of the Pin Pot participants that support both the Hurricane Mat Club and the Live Your Cor foundation with your generous donations!
